|Allegiance||House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest|
Ser Karyl Vance is a knight of House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest. He has three daughters, Liane, Rhialta, and Emphyria.
Appearance and Character
Karyl would be handsome except for his winestain birthmark which discolors one side of his face and half his neck. He has sad eyes and a melancholy look. The knight has a calm demeanor, but his birthmark can darken when he is angered.
A Game of Thrones
Ser Karyl is sent to King's Landing with Ser Marq Piper and Ser Raymun Darry to receive King Robert I Baratheon's permission to hunt down the Lannister men who have been raiding the riverlands. Lord Eddard Stark, Hand of the King, agrees and sends Lord Beric Dondarrion with a party to kill Ser Gregor Clegane.
Karyl becomes Lord of Wayfarer's Rest after the death of his father in the battle in the hills below the Golden Tooth. Karyl and Marq raid the westerlands across the Red Fork of the Trident.
The new Lord Karyl is in the list of nobles King Joffrey I Baratheon declares must do him homage or be named traitors to the realm. Karyl and Marq instead bring the young Lyman Darry, Lord of Darry, to Riverrun, where Robb Stark is declared King in the North by northmen and rivermen.
A Clash of Kings
Lord Karyl departs Riverrun to defend his lands with permission from his liege lord, Ser Edmure Tully. Karyl commands the defense of fords upstream from Riverrun in the Battle of the Fords.
A Storm of Swords
Lord Karyl is among the seven nobles who launch the funeral boat of Lord Hoster Tully at Riverrun.
A Feast for Crows
Lord Karyl bent the knee after the Red Wedding. He is one of the reluctant river lords who join with House Lannister in the siege of Riverrun, and he participates in Ser Jaime Lannister's war council. Once Riverrun surrenders, Karyl advises Jaime to resolve the siege of Raventree.
Quotes by Karyl
I was attending my lord father in the pass below the Golden Tooth, as was Ser Marq. When the word of these outrages reached Ser Edmure Tully, he sent word that we should take a small force of men to find what survivors we could and bring them to the king.—Karyl to Eddard Stark
Edwyn: His helm bears a black trout on its crest that makes him easy to pick out from afar. I propose that we move our siege towers close, fill them full of bowmen, and feign an attack upon the gates. That will bring Ser Brynden to the battlements, crest and all. Let every archer smear his shafts with night soil, and make that crest his mark. Once Ser Brynden dies, Riverrun is ours."
Emmon: Mine. Riverrun is mine.Karyl: Will the night soil be your own contribution, Edwyn? A mortal poison, I don't doubt.
—Edwyn Frey, Emmon Frey, and Karyl
