At fourteen, two years younger than [[Daena Targaryen|Daena]], Rhaena was just as lovely as her sister, but hers was a softer, sweeter, more feminine beauty. Though she was not plump, her body was more rounded than Daena's; her breasts were larger, her lips fuller. Rhaena's hair was more [[gold]] than [[silver]], and was always carefully coiffed and combed. In personality, she differed greatly from her older sister. Where Daena was wilful, wild, and adventurous, Rhaena was dutiful, meek, and passive. She loved to dress in white and gold, and was very fond of lace trim on her sleeves and bodice. Born in {{Date|147}}, Rhaena was the second daughter of King [[Aegon III Targaryen]] and Queen [[Daenaera Velaryon]]. She had two older brothers, [[Daeron I Targaryen|Daeron]] and [[Baelor I Targaryen|Baelor]], and two sisters, [[Daena Targaryen|Daena]], who was older, and [[Elaena Targaryen|Elaena]], who was younger.{{Ref|TWOIAF|Appendix: Targaryen Lineage}} 

During the reign of their brother Baelor, Rhaena and her sisters were confined in the keep within the [[Red Keep]] that became known as the [[Maidenvault]].{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Targaryen Kings: Baelor I}} According to Baelor, this was done to preserve their innocence from the wickedness of the world and the lusts of impious men, but many suspected he feared that he himself would be tempted to sin by the sight of their beauty.<ref name=ssm/>{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Targaryen Kings: Baelor I}}{{Ref|ASOS|6}} Rhaena, unlike her sisters, never chafed at her confinement.<ref name=ssm/> She was almost as pious as Baelor, and she eventually became a [[septa]].{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Targaryen Kings: Baelor I}}

After the death of Baelor, Daena was briefly considered as a possible heir to the throne. However, the memories of the [[Dance of the Dragons]] and of [[Rhaenyra Targaryen]], the last woman to sit the Iron Throne, left many leery of the idea of a ruling queen.
