History
When Brandon Stark learned of his sister Lyanna's abduction at the hands of Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, he took off for King's Landing with Jeffory Mallister, Kyle Royce, Elbert Arryn, and his squire, Ethan. When Brandon entered the Red Keep and demanded that Rhaegar come out and die, King Aerys II Targaryen had Brandon's party arrested for threatening the life of the crown prince. The fathers of Brandon and his companions were called to King's Landing to answer for the crimes of their sons. The king had the fathers and sons all executed, with only Ethan spared.[3] Aerys then demanded that Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, execute his wards, Robert Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End, and Brandon's younger brother Eddard Stark, now Lord of Winterfell. Robert's Rebellion started shortly thereafter when Jon refused the king's command.[4]
After Aerys's death in the Sack of King's Landing, Eddard lifted the siege of Storm's End.[2] Lord Stark then rode to the Red Mountains with Ethan, Martyn Cassel, Theo Wull, Howland Reed, Ser Mark Ryswell, and Willam Dustin, Lord of Barrowton. At the tower of joy, they were confronted by the last three members of Aerys's Kingsguard, Ser Arthur Dayne, Ser Oswell Whent, and Lord Commander Gerold Hightower. All but Eddard and Howland were slain in the ensuing combat at the tower of joy. Eddard used stones from the tower to built eight cairns for the fallen.[2]
