House Rosby of Rosby is a noble house from the crownlands.[1] They rule the castle of Rosby and its village,[2] which are located just northeast of King's Landing.[3] The Rosbys are not known for their robustness.[4]
Their blazon consists into three red chevronels on ermine.[2][5] Their motto is not mentioned in the books.
Contents
History
Crownlands
House Rosby was one of the first houses to yield peacefully to House Targaryen during Aegon's Conquest, surrendering to Rhaenys Targaryen and Meraxes.[6] The Rosby lands became part of the crownlands surrounding King's Landing.[1] Lord Jon Rosby was named Warden of the Sands by King Aegon I Targaryen during the First Dornish War, but Jon was killed in the Defenestration of Sunspear.[7]
Ser Rayford Rosby defended King Maegor I Targaryen during his trial of seven, but Rayford was slain during the fighting.[8] Lord Rosby remained loyal to the king even as his downfall became certain,[8] and was one of the last to see the king alive. In the chaos that followed the discovery of Maegor's body, Lord Rosby drank a cup of hemlock to join his king in death. His young son received forgiveness from King Jaehaerys I Targaryen at Dragonstone.[9] Lord Rosby died from the Shivers in 59 AC.[10]
Dance of the Dragons
Lord Rosby was imprisoned in the Red Keep at the start of the Dance of the Dragons for supporting Rhaenyra Targaryen and the blacks instead of Aegon II Targaryen and the greens. After Ser Criston Cole became Hand of the King to Aegon, Lord Rosby joined the greens to avoid being executed by the King's Justice.[11]
Considering him a faithless friend,[12] Rhaenyra had Lord Rosby executed during the fall of King's Landing. Prince Daemon Targaryen argued that Lord Rosby's eldest child, a twelve-year-old daughter, be wed to Hugh Hammer, but Rhaenyra refused and allowed the Rosby inheritance to be passed to a younger son.[12] That same daughter refused Rhaenyra admittance to Rosby after the Storming of the Dragonpit.[13]
Once King Aegon II Targaryen regained the Iron Throne, Lords Rosby, Stokeworth, and Darklyn were forced to surrender their castles to the greens and pay a heavy ransom. Levies from Rosby abandoned Lord Borros Baratheon during the Battle of the Kingsroad.[14]
Later History
When Lord Brynden Rivers marched on Whitewalls to quash the Second Blackfyre Rebellion, among the houses who came in support was House Rosby.[15]
Lord Gyles Rosby was among those offered as possible matches by Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne, to his daughter, Princess Arianne Martell.[16]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
Lord Gyles Rosby is frequently seen at the court of King's Landing, always coughing.[17][1] He conspires with Queen Regent Cersei Lannister to take Prince Tommen Baratheon out of the city and keep him safe at Rosby disguised as a page.[18] Tyrion Lannister considers Gyles "too sickly to run and too craven to fight". Ser Jacelyn Bywater lays a trap along the Rosby road, and Gyles is captured, along with Tommen and his guard. While Tommen is held under house arrest by Tyrion's men instead of Cersei's at Rosby, Ser Boros Blount of the Kingsguard is imprisoned in its dungeon.[19] Jacelyn brings a levy of Rosby spearmen to the capital before the Battle of the Blackwater.[19]
A Storm of Swords
Lord Gyles is among the gathered nobility to welcome the Dornish party, headed by Prince Oberyn Martell, to King's Landing.[20]
Gyles testifies at Tyrion's trial for the death of King Joffrey I Baratheon at his wedding feast, stating that he had seen him filling Joffrey's wedding chalice.[21]
A Feast for Crows
Lord Gyles is named master of coin (under the title of lord treasurer) by Queen Regent Cersei. He promises Cersei that he will have a statue made of the deceased Lord Tywin Lannister to be placed by the Lion Gate in King's Landing.[22] Gyles attends the wedding of King Tommen I Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell.[23]
The ward of Gyles Rosby refuses Lady Falyse Stokeworth and her husband, Ser Balman Byrch, shelter at Rosby when they are on their way to King's Landing. According to Falyse, should Lord Gyles die, Rosby should come to House Stokeworth, since Lady Tanda Stokeworth was an aunt to Lord Gyles's second wife and is a third cousin herself.[24]
Lord Gyles dies at King's Landing from his cough. He has no immediate heir, and though Grand Maester Pycelle raises that his ward has a claim, Cersei dismisses the ward as having no blood relation.[25]
A Dance with Dragons
When the issue of succession at Rosby is raised at the small council, Grand Maester Pycelle states there are six claimants. However, Ser Kevan Lannister tables the issue.[26]
House Rosby at the end of the third century
The known Rosbys during the timespan of the events described in A Song of Ice and Fire are:
- Lord {Gyles Rosby}, Lord of Rosby. A sickly old man who coughs frequently. Named master of coin by Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, after the death of her lord father.[22] Died of his sickness at the Red Keep in 300 AC.[25]
With unknown familiar relationship with the main branch, other Rosbys include:
- Lady {Bethany Rosby}. Deceased sixth wife of Lord Walder Frey. Mother to five Freys: Perwyn, Benfrey, Willamen, Olyvar and Roslin.[27]
