Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Hoster Tully, Lord Paramount of the Trident, sends Ser Marq, Ser Karyl Vance, and Ser Raymun Darry to King's Landing with the survivors of Sherrer to ask the permission of King Robert I Baratheon to destroy the westermen who are raiding the riverlands. Eddard Stark, Hand of the King, sends Raymun with Beric Dondarrion, Lord of Blackhaven, to execute Ser Gregor Clegane.[2]
After their fathers are defeated by Ser Jaime Lannister in the battle in the hills below the Golden Tooth, Marq and Ser Karyl Vance begin launching raids across the Red Fork of the Trident into the westerlands.[5] Their approximately fifty men attack Lannister supply lines, hampering Jaime's siege of Riverrun.[6]
Marq and Karyl continue raiding until Robb Stark arrives and breaks the siege with the battle in the Whispering Wood and the Battle of the Camps. The loss of the Lannister outriders was thought to be due to Marq, and so it was not realized that the host lead by Robb was approaching Riverrun.[6]
Afterward, Marq sits at Robb's war council at Riverrun, where he calls for a march against Casterly Rock and also for allying with Renly Baratheon. Robb is instead proclaimed King in the North by the northmen and rivermen assembled at Riverrun.[3]
A Clash of Kings
Given leave by his liege lord, Ser Edmure Tully, Marq leaves Riverrun with his men to defend his burned lands.[7]
Marq leads House Piper during the Battle of the Fords.[8]
A Storm of Swords
With his father Hoster dying and his sister Catelyn under house arrest, Edmure spends much of his time with his friends, Marq and Patrek Mallister.[9]
Marq is one of the seven nobles who launch Hoster's funereal boat at Riverrun.[10]
During the journey to the Twins for his wedding to Roslin Frey, Edmure rides with Marq, Patrek, Lymond Goodbrook, and young Vances.[11] Marq's retinue from House Piper includes at least five kinsmen who are knights and twenty men-at-arms.[12]
Marq is among Robb's nobles who eat the food and drink of Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing, upon arrival at the Twins, granting them guest right.[13] During the wedding feast, Marq plays a drinking game with Ser Danwell Frey and jests with Alyx Frey. He joins the group which takes Roslin from the hall, and Catelyn Stark observes him removing the shoe of Edmure's bride as part of the bedding custom.[14] The Starks and Tullys are betrayed by Houses Frey and Bolton, however, and Robb is killed by Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort.[14]
Traveling through the riverlands, Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane encounter a Piper bowman sworn to Marq. Wounded by a Bolton during the Red Wedding, the bowman is given the gift of mercy by the Hound.[15]
A Feast for Crows
Marq is held by the Freys as a hostage at the Twins after the Red Wedding, to the consternation of his father, Lord Clement Piper, who believes that his bending his knee to the Iron Throne will lead to his son being returned. That does not happen, which enrages Clement, leading him to threaten Edwyn Frey at the war council during the siege of Riverrun.[12]
After Riverrun surrenders, Jaime Lannister informs Edwyn that King Tommen I Baratheon requires all captives taken during the Red Wedding, which displeases the Freys.[16]
A Dance with Dragons
Marq remains a captive.[17]

Quotes by Marq
Raymun: By the time I could return to my own lands, Clegane and his vermin were back across the Red Fork, riding for Lannister's hills.
Petyr: And if they come again, ser?
Marq: If they come again, we'll use their blood to water the fields they burnt.[2]
—Raymun Darry, Petyr Baelish, and Marq
Marq: Do we have your leave to take our vengeance against Ser Gregor, then?
Eddard: Vengeance? I thought we were speaking of justice.[2]—Marq and Eddard Stark
Alyx: I hear Tully men have trout between their legs instead of cocks. Does it take a worm to make them rise?
Marq: I hear that Frey women have two gates in place of one!
Alyx: Aye, but both are closed and barred to little things like you![14]
—Alyx Frey and Marq
Quotes about Marq
He was a swaggering bantam rooster of a youth, too young and too hot-blooded for Ned's taste, though a fast friend of Catelyn's brother, Edmure Tully.[2]
—thoughts of Eddard Stark
Tywin: Marq Piper and Karyl Vance are loose in our rear, raiding our lands across the Red Fork.
Tyrion: The gall of them, fighting back.[5]
Clement: Where is Marq, answer me that? What have you done with my son? He was a guest at your bloody wedding.
Edwyn: And our honored guest he shall remain, until you prove your loyalty to His Grace, King Tommen.[12]—Clement Piper and Edwyn Frey
