|Title||Second-in-command of the royal fleet|
Ned had a thick black beard, which earned him the nickname Blackbean.
When Lord Unwin Peake became Hand of the King, he made his uncle Ser Gedmund Peake commander of the royal fleet with the more experienced Ned Bean as his second-in-command. Ser Gedmund and Ned, with reinforcement from the Velaryon fleet commanded by Lord Alyn Velaryon, were sent against Racallio Ryndoon, the self-proclaimed King of the Narrow Sea. When Racallio allied with Tyrosh, Ser Gedmund and Ned remained at Tarth to await further instructions from Lord Unwin. Lord Alyn protested they would lose time, however, and left them behind. Lord Alyn's attack was a great victory against the Braavosi.
I would have hanged him, but I am loath to waste good hempen rope on a bean.
Behind the Scenes
George R. R. Martin may have created Ned Bean as a reference to the famous real-world pirate Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard. Ned may also be reference to Sean Bean, who played Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark in HBO's Game of Thrones.
