The Purple Lotus is a seedy winesink by Meereen’s spice market. It is run by Zahrina.
From the outside the Purple Lotus is a low brick hovel squatting amidst a row of similar hovels in the shadow of the great yellow-and-green pyramid of Rhazdar. A purple lotus is painted on its weathered wooden door.
Within, the Purple Lotus is actually a large space consisting of one long hall stretching left and right past adjoining hovels. At the far end of the room is a fighting pit in which naked pit fighters duel with knives while watchers cheer them on.
The undercellar of the Purple Lotus is a brick vault located below a flight of steep and twisting wooden steps. Wooden wine vats line the vaults of the cellar, which is three times as large as the winesink above. An overturned barrel can serve as a table. The vault is lit by a red lantern and a black candle.
A Dance with Dragons
The clandestine meeting between the Tattered Prince and Quentyn Martell takes place at the Purple Lotus, with Quentyn providing the password "freedom" in order to gain admittance to the winesink. Zahrina has them descend to the undercellar. Quentyn is accompanied by Ser Gerris Drinkwater and Ser Archibald Yronwood, while the Tattered Prince is joined by Caggo, Meris, and Denzo D'han. After apologizing for having previously misled the Windblown, Quentyn asks the captain for aid in stealing one of the dragons of Daenerys Targaryen.
Within, the air was hazy with bluish smoke, whose sweet smell could not quite cover up the deeper stinks of piss and sour wine and rotting meat.—thoughts of Quentyn Martell
Will you drink? Zahrina offers food as well. Her bread is stale and her stew is unspeakable. Grease and salt, with a morsel or two of meat. Dog, she says, but I think rat is more likely. It will not kill you, though. I have found that it is only when the food is tempting that one must beware. Poisoners invariably choose the choicest dishes.—the Tattered Prince to Quentyn Martell
