Ser Rhogar Velaryon was a knight from House Velaryon. He was a nephew of Lord Corlys Velaryon by his youngest brother. He had four brothers, including Ser Malentine, and several cousins.[1]
History
In 126 AC, When Rhogar's uncle, Lord Corlys Velaryon, fell ill, the succession of Driftmark was called into question. Both of Corlys's children had died, and Corlys's eldest grandson stood to inherit the Iron Throne. When Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen suggested Corlys's second grandson, Lucerys Velaryon, instead, Rhogar's cousin, Ser Vaemond Velaryon, protested on the grounds that Lucerys and his Velaryon brothers were bastards. After Vaemond was executed at the behest of Princess Rhaenyra, Rhogar and his siblings brought their case before the sick and failing King Viserys I Targaryen at King's Landing. However, they made the mistake of questioning the legitimacy of Rhaenyra’s children in front of the king. Viserys had their tongues removed for this insolence, as per his earlier decree.[2][3] Rhogar and his four brothers were thereafter known as the "silent five".[1]
When Lord Corlys died in 132 AC, he was succeeded as Lord of the Tides by his bastard grandson, Alyn of Hull. This succession was not uncontested. Rhogar and his only surviving brother, Ser Malentine, yet again took their own claim to the small council in King’s Landing. When the Hand of the King and the regents ruled against them, Rhogar and Malentine refused to accept the decision. As Mushroom put it in his testimony, "lacking tongues with which to make their appeal, they preferred to argue with swords". The plot of the silent brothers to assassinate Alyn failed when the guards at Castle Driftmark proved loyal to the Sea Snake's memory and his chosen heir. Ser Rhogar was captured during the attempt, and his brother was slain. Rhogar was condemned to death, but choose to take the black.[1]
